Elizabeth Warren apologizes for calling herself Native American

Posted online

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren issued an apology for identifying herself as Native American for nearly two decades.

“I can’t go back,” Warren said in an interview with The Washington Post. “But I am sorry for furthering confusion on tribal sovereignty and tribal citizenship and harm that resulted.”

Warren previously ordered a DNA test and released employment documents to show she did not use her ethnicity to further her career.

Cherokee leaders were outraged in October when Warren released the DNA test results, saying she shouldn't have used the text to show any connection to the tribe. The test indicated she had a Native American ancestor six to 10 generations ago.
