Egypt's ousted president jailed for 20 years

Posted online
An Egyptian court has sentenced former President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in jail for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his rule.

One of several trials he faces, the move marks the first verdict he's received, according to BBC News.

The former president was deposed by the army in July 2013 after mass street protests. Authorities also have banned his Muslim Brotherhood movement and arrested thousands of his supporters.

Morsi reportedly avoided a death sentence by escaping the more serious charge of inciting the killing of protesters, according to the report.
