Egg costs jump 18.3%, most since 1973

Egg prices jumped 18.3 percent in June, the largest increase since 1973, according to the Consumer Price Index.

The reason? The egg industry is hurting from a widespread outbreak of the avian flu, which has affected some 48 million birds, according to Fox Business.

Last month, the average price for a carton of eggs was $2.49.
