Marshfield native Edwin P. Hubble, for whom the Hubble Space Telescope was named, was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians during a special ceremony Sept. 6 at the Webster County Courthouse in Marshfield.
"We are honoring a native son that not only changed the world with his ideas, but how all of us look at the entire universe," said Missouri Speaker of the House Jim Kreider, who unveiled a bronze bust of Hubble at the induction. The bust will remain on display at the Webster County Courthouse until Oct. 4, when it will be transported to the third-floor rotunda of the state capitol building for permanent display.
Hubble was born Nov. 20, 1889, in Marshfield. During his career as an astronomer, Hubble revolutionized the world's knowledge of the size, structure and properties of the universe, and first developed the now widely accepted expanding universe theory.
Hubble assisted in the design for the first telescope at the Mount Palomar Observa-tory. Much of his work served later as the basis of the Hubble Space Telescope.
