Dutch data protection watchdog orders Clearview AI to pay $34M fine

New York-based facial recognition startup Clearview AI has been hit with a $33.7 million fine by the Netherlands’ Data Protection Agency.

DPA officials allege the company has created an “illegal database” of billions of photos of faces and violated the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.

Jack Mulcaire, Clearview’s chief legal officer, said in a statement to The Associated Press that the DPA's decision is “unlawful, devoid of due process and is unenforceable.”
