Dunkin’ Donuts targets Starbucks customers

Posted online
Taking advantage of a change in rival Starbucks’ loyalty program, Dunkin’ Donuts is targeting angry customers of the Seattle-based coffee chain in a bid to grow business.

Starbucks announced last month it changed the rewards program to tally dollars spent over items purchased, meaning customers must spend $62.50 to earn a beverage award.

Under Dunkin’ Donuts’ program, the same level is reached at $40. A Dunkin’ executive said the company also was targeting Starbucks customers with $5 gift cards, according to Reuters.

An industry analyst estimated customer defection to Dunkin’ could net the company an additional 0.25 percent to 0.4 percent sales growth.
