Drury volunteers start Habitat home construction

Posted online
Rainy weather didn’t deter more than 300 Drury University students, faculty and staff from starting construction Monday on a Habitat for Humanity home. They simply moved the project indoors.

The volunteers prefabricated 28 walls in about 90 minutes at the former Carter-Waters warehouse on the Drury campus. The effort was part of a freshman orientation service-learning project.

The home is being constructed with sustainable materials and will be energy-efficient. Drury architecture students, who designed the house, plan to pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, with the help of Bates & Associates architects and funding from Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

Drury’s Habitat chapter has earned $50,000 in pledges for the project, in addition to in-kind building material donations.

An official construction kickoff ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 25.

Amy Pinegar, her three children and one grandchild will move into the house when it is complete.
