Drury students provide free tax help

Posted online
With help from cosponsors Great Southern Bank, Mid-Missouri Bank and the Ministers Coalition of Springfield, accounting students at Drury University will operate an Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site, providing free help to eligible taxpayers.

The VITA site, at the Breech School of Business, at the corner of Central Street and Drury Lane, will work with low-income and elderly individuals to file their taxes. Assistance will be available 10 a.m.–3 p.m. on Saturdays between Feb. 2 and March 15, except on Feb. 23, when no service will be available. The VITA site also will be open 4–7 p.m. on the following Mondays:

Feb. 11, Feb. 25 and March 10; and 8 a.m.–10:30 a.m. the following Fridays: Feb. 15, Feb. 29 and March 14.

Tax service is available on a walk-in basis only; no appointments are taken. Taxpayers should bring all W-2 and 1099 forms, Social Security cards of all dependents and copies of their 2006 tax returns.

All returns at the site will be filed electronically unless the IRS requests a manual return. All taxpayers must be available at the site to sign the appropriate forms for joint returns.
