Drury also has joined the Climate Commitment Leadership Circle, a group of 42 U.S. universities committed to addressing global-warming issues. Other schools include the University of Florida, Arizona State University, Ball State University and Pacific Lutheran University.
Under both commitments, Drury will work to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions and will serve as an example to its students and the community in slowing or reversing the planet’s climate change.
To keep its pledge, Drury is developing ways of addressing global warming through the Drury President’s Council on Sustainability.
The council’s projects so far include obtaining grants to fund two part-time student recycling coordinators for the campus, and agreeing to host the Midwest Summit on the Sustainable Redevelopment of Contaminated Properties March 6–8 in conjunction with the city of Springfield and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Drury also will conduct energy audits of campus facilities to determine how to improve energy efficiency.
The council also has planned a Spring Planting Day for later this semester.
In addition, the school’s Habitat for Humanity Chapter will partner with the organization’s Springfield chapter, National Avenue Christian Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and Bike and Build Inc. to build a sustainable house. Drury’s design and building students will take care of the house’s specifications and design work. Construction is set to begin in the fall.[[In-content Ad]]
