Drury grad receives top Internet award

A Drury graduate placed first in the experimental video category at the Vimeo Awards, held Oct. 8 and 9 in New York City.

Chris Beckman, who graduated from Drury in May 2010 with a fine arts degree, created the video for a class called Video Art, taught by Drury professors Blaine Whisenhunt and Greg Booker, along with assistance from Drury video instructor Brian Shipman, according to a Drury news release. link to:

“Students in the course were given an appropriation video assignment and told to sample and remix existing footage to create a composite,” Whisenhunt said.

Vimeo, a video sharing Web site in the vein of YouTube and other video streaming sites, was created as a venue for creative work, according to its Web site.

Beckman's video "oops" has been viewed about 32,000 times, according to Vimeo.

"I’m both surprised and honored that people took the time to view my work and recognize something so experimental and nontraditional,”  Beckman said in the release.

Drury has a video channel on Vimeo with 24 videos and 10 subscribers.
