Drury extends campus to Volos, Greece

Posted online

Starting this fall, Drury University students will be able to study in Volos, Greece, which will be home to the Drury University Center, according to an announcement from the university.

The city of Volos is renovating space for Drury's use in the Spirer building which also is home to Volos' municipal center for historical research and documentation. Drury will lease classroom, studio, office and lounge space, and students will have access to the municipal center's library, research resources, gallery and a 200-seat auditorium.

The Drury University Center in Greece, unlike other American university centers in that country, is designed for the education of American, not Greek, students. Drury students in Greece will learn about global issues, specifically addressing concerns in Volos and its surrounding areas. Students in the Greece program's signature course Global Studio will be asked to develop plans for an archeological park in the Volos area that respects the cultural and historic environments.

"Volos is the perfect place for American students to experience global learning. The city itself is rich in history, tied to the heights of classical Greece, but also a modern city with a tradition of music and theater," said Alkis Tsolakis, director of the Volos center and professor of architecture at Drury. "It has also been an intersecting point for Greek, Middle Eastern Balkan and European people and so it will provide a challenge for students when they are asked to think in a culturally alert way."
