Downstream building second hotel

Downstream Casino Resort has announced the purpose of work that's been going on for the last month at its hotel site at the borders of Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas.

In a June 13 news release, the resort announced that construction is under way on a new hotel and spa immediately adjacent to the current hotel site.

The project is slated to support more than 400 construction jobs through 2012 and create 40 full-time positions on the Downstream roster.

Downstream Marketing Manager Sean Harrison said in the release the construction already in progress represents a $50 million investment and will add 152 rooms. The hotel is expected to open by the end of 2012.

The company in early June acknowledged that it had been formulating plans for years to build a second hotel, but the news wasn't made official until today.

"Even through a long and difficult recession, we have done very well, and it is our hope we can continue to help build and share in a strengthening regional economy," said John Berrey, chairman of the Quapaw Tribe and the Downstream Development Authority, in the release.

With the expansion, Downstream's total investment in the property now sits at about $361 million.
