DOR warns of Missouri income tax phone scam

Posted online
The Missouri Department of Revenue is warning taxpayers today of a recent scam involving income tax.

According to a statement from Director of Revenue Trish Vincent, the department has received multiple calls from people saying that a man is calling taxpayers, asking for bank account and routing information. The man, who identifies himself as Shane, allegedly says he needs the information so the department can return overpayments of income taxes.

The caller leaves a Canada phone number for people to call.

“These calls are fraudulent and illegal,” Vincent said in the statement. “We want taxpayers to be aware of this scam and remind everyone they should never give personal information or banking information over the phone to unknown callers.”

The department is investigating the calls, the statement said.
