Doe Run to pay $150M to settle Peru smelter claims

Doe Run, owned by billionaire Ira Rennert, agreed to pay $150 million to resolve claims that a lead smelter poisoned residents of a Peruvian town.

The settlement covers lawsuits filed by more than 1,380 La Oroya residents.

The residents have alleged they have long-term health problems from smelter emissions and tainted water.
