DNR seeks public comments on former Vickers facility

Posted online
The public can review proposed permit modifications until June 29 for the former Vickers manufacturing facility at 2800 W. 10th St. in Joplin.

According to a DNR news release, the modifications address concerns raised in an appeal of the Missouri Hazardous Waste Management Facility Part I permit, and they also update several other permit conditions.

Between 1952 and 1987, the Vickers facility was used to produce piston and gear hydraulic pumps, motors, hydrostatic transmissions and power steering boosters for industrial and agricultural uses. Past activities at the facility produced spent solvents, waste oils, paint residues, metal plating wastes, corrosives, scrap metals, cyanides and spent kolene salts. The facility includes two impoundments that closed as a landfill with waste in place, and other solid waste management units.

The proposed modifications are listed online at www.dnr.mo.gov/env/hwp/

permits/notices.htm. Because of their size, supporting documents are not available online, but they can be reviewed at several locations, including the Joplin Public Library, 300 S. Main, or DNR’s Southwest Regional Office at 2040 W. Woodland Ave. in Springfield.

Only the proposed modification conditions are open for public comment. All other conditions of the existing permit will remain in effect until the permit is reissued or additional modifications are proposed.
