DNR awards grant for research

Southwest Missouri State University has been awarded a $100,000 grant for its James River Total Maximum Daily Load Project, which is designed to reduce the size and frequency of harmful algae growths in the James River and its major tributaries.|ret||ret||tab|

According to a news release from SMSU, the TMDL project is federally mandated in an attempt to control the algal blooms. The project will be led by Robert Pavlowsky, PhD, assistant professor of geography, geology and planning, John Havel, PhD, professor of biology, and Richard Biagioni, PhD, professor of chemistry. |ret||ret||tab|

Pavlowsky, Havel and Biagioni will conduct the research with assistance by graduate and undergraduate student employees from their respective departments.|ret||ret||tab|

"This is the most comprehensive study of its kind in the region. The James River is one of the top-ranked watersheds in Missouri slated for pollution studies and TMDL development," Pavlowsky said.[[In-content Ad]]
