Discovery Center gets $2.2 million in federal funds

Posted online

During a time of budget cutbacks for many organizations, the Springfield Discovery Center is adding to its budget.

U.S. Sen. Christopher Bond and U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt helped secure $2.2 million in appropriations for the nonprofit organization. The appropriations are through the Division of Labor, Health and Human Services. Funds will be used for programs and exhibits.

"One of the goals of the center has been to expand learning experiences and this $2.2 million appropriation will take the center a long way toward that goal," Rep. Roy Blunt said.

Discovery Center CEO Emily Fox said she will begin outlining how the funds will be used over the next year. The money will be used to provide additional programs and exhibits for visitors. The federal funds will be sent to the Discovery Center on a reimbursement basis.

The Discovery Center will continue fundraising efforts to help with construction costs that include renovating and expanding the former Trailways building, adding new exhibits, program areas and classroom space while providing support areas for staff. One large addition planned for the upcoming year is an interactive, digital theater experience known as Immersion Cinema.

The federal funds can't be used for renovation of the facility.

"It is our goal to leverage this gift with private donations to create a truly outstanding center for the entire region," Fox said. "We take pride in being good stewards with everything we receive, whether it is a federal grant or is from local patrons."

The Discovery Center's newest program, The Artist in the Studio, opens on March 4, featuring opportunities for visitors to be participants in the art-making process.
