Taney County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Merrell, with help from Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, has filed a charge of deceptive business practice against Garry E. Champion, 59, according to a news release from Nixon.
Champion allegedly signed a letter as a general counsel for a Missouri business in a real estate transaction in order to obtain money that had been deposited in an escrow fund, according to the release.
Deceptive business practice is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Champion was disbarred as an attorney 10 years ago after he was convicted in federal court for embezzling from the Edith M. Short Trust, for which he was the trustee. According to Nixon, beneficiaries of the charitable trust had not received payments as provided, and more than $700,000 in trust assets were depleted to about $25,000.
