Digital streaming devices now in 20% of U.S. TV households

The usage of digital streaming media players has more than doubled in the past year, according to a study by St. Louis-based market research firm GfK.

With such devices as Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Google Chromecast in the marketplace, St. Louis Business Journal reports now one in five U.S. households are watching television on digital streaming media players. Last year, GfK said 12 percent of households with TVs streamed shows and movies through services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus.

As a result, the GfK study showed about a third of those viewers were reducing or eliminating pay TV services.
