A provost research forum will be held at noon in Plaster Student Union Room 313 on the MSU campus as part of a series of research presentations.
Neal Lopinot, director of MSU’s Center for Archaeological Research, will present “Big Money, Big Research, Big Headaches, Big Eddy” – a summary of discoveries and difficulties from nine years of research at the Big Eddy dig site in Stockton.
The site has a nearly complete prehistoric record and offers evidence that people arrived in North America before the time traditionally accepted as the first arrival.
Laszlo Kovacs, associate research professor of fruit science, will present “Bitter Grapes that Sweeten Our Wine.” He will examine grape genomic research conducted on MSU’s Mountain Grove campus and the role of North America’s wild grapevines in modern viticulture.
The Vitis Gene Discovery Program on the Mountain Grove campus provides research of the molecular basis of grapevines and their resistance to pests, diseases and environmental stress.
Archeaological research at Big Eddy and genomic research at Mountain Grove account for more than $1 million in grant-funded projects for MSU.
The event is open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
