Did Starbucks start a pumpkin boom?

When pumpkin growers look at a field of orange orbs, they see gold thanks to consumers' love of a certain coffee drink.
 
According to CNNMoney, a national craving for pumpkin-flavored foods and drinks can be attributed to Starbucks' popular pumpkin spice latte. The report states pumpkin sales have grown 34 percent in the past five years to meet demand for pumpkin-spiced items from beer to beef jerky.
 
Farmers are meeting the demand by turning over more land to pumpkin vines. The USDA reports acreage dedicated to pumpkins has increased by one-third in the past decade.
