Pennsylvania-based Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) is beginning to roll out a new Field & Stream store concept to compete with outdoor retailers Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s (NYSE: CAB).
In a presentation to stock analysts, Dick’s Sporting Goods management said 3,000 people were lined up outside a recent Field & Stream store opening and that “the store’s first month performance was better than any store, of any type of concept, that the company has ever opened,”
The Motley Fool reports.
Dick’s opened its first Field & Stream last month in Cranberry Township, Penn., and a second is slated for northern Kentucky, according to published reports. The Field & Stream stores selling archery equipment, fishing gear and firearms are designed smaller than their competitors, but they’re also outfitted with taxidermy and wildlife displays.
Both Springfield-based Bass Pro and Nebraska-based Cabela’s have plans to expand their store portfolios.
