In February, the department began sending its nonautomated outgoing mail through the University of Missouri, rather than a private vendor. The change saves taxpayers 4.5 cents per piece of mail, according to a news release from the department.
Between February and June, the department sent 805,929 pieces of nonautomated mail, costing $262,732.85 at the new rate. Under the former agreement with a private vendor, the cost would have been $298,999.66.
The department previously sent nonautomated mail through a private vendor to obtain bulk postage reductions; that process cost 37.1 cents per piece of mail. The new agreement with MU costs 32.6 cents per piece.
