Demolition starts at York after SPS board approves construction plan

Posted online

It’s been an active week for York Elementary in Springfield.

Demolition started at the existing school site after the Springfield Public Schools Board of Education on June 8 gave the go-ahead toward construction funding, according to the board’s agenda and district officials.

SPS spokesperson Teresa Bledsoe provided documentation indicating the board accepted a guaranteed maximum price of $16.5 million from general contractor R.E. Smith Construction Co. The company vetted 68 subcontractor bids accepted in May for 22 construction disciplines related to the project. The guaranteed maximum price includes demolition, insurance, preconstruction and the construction manager’s fee.

“We’re excited to get this started,” said Travis Shaw, executive director of operations, before the board voted unanimously on the construction contract.

SPS yesterday posted a video of crews demolishing the 2100 W. Nichols St. building.

Shaw said during the meeting the construction project is slated to take 14 months to complete, which would have the new school ready for students in the fall 2022 semester.

Paragon Architecture LLC worked with Sapp Design Associates Architects PC to design the facility with safety and modern aesthetics in mind, incorporating secured entrances and a variety of collaborative learning spaces, according to past reporting. The two-story project is slated to span 61,000 square feet and include a tornado safe room that will serve as a gymnasium and music room during school hours.

The York project is part of the $168 million bond issue approved by voters in 2019.
