Democrats have votes in place to pass Iran deal

Despite united Republican opposition to the Iran nuclear accord, Senate Democrats say they have clinched the 41 votes necessary to forward the controversial agreement and block a resolution of disapproval, The Associated Press reports.

Supporters of the deal have the votes necessary to uphold a veto of the resolution of disapproval if needed, but it is unclear if all are on board to support a filibuster.

With or without the disapproval resolution in place, the ultimate outcome of the Iran accord has not been in doubt. The agreement, which has drawn stiff opposition from Republicans, gives Iran hundreds of billions of dollars in relief from sanctions in exchange for a decade of constraints on the country’s nuclear program.
