DeLoreans coming back into production

Posted online
DeLoreans no longer are just a thing of the past; you can have one in your future. Plans are underway to start building and selling DeLoreans next year for the first time in more than 30 years.

Made famous by the “Back to the Future” movie series, CNNMoney reports the cars won’t be cheap, with a price tag around $100,000 — flux capacitor not included.

But the steep price tag doesn’t mean you’re getting a new car. Since the original Belfast, Ireland, plant closed, it's served as storage for over a million spare parts which will be used to manufacture the cars. Only the engine will be new.

The new DeLorean Motor Co. bought up the car's parts and engineering plans during the 1990s.

CNNMoney reports normally it would be impossible to make DeLoreans under current federal safety rules, but new regulations are going into effect later this year allowing the production of replica cars without requiring them to meet safety guidelines involving air bags and crash tests.
