Debit vs. credit cards: Which is safer to swipe?

The recent theft of personal information of Target shoppers has put the debit or credit quandary back in the forefront of consumers’ minds. So which is safer to swipe – debit or credit cards?
 
According to CNNMoney, in the event of information theft, debit card users are more likely to be liable for fraudulent charges than those who use credit.
 
That’s because federal law caps at $50 the amount a credit card can charge a user for a fraudulent bill; it’s $500 or more for illegal charges on a debit card.
