David Letterman plans 2015 retirement

Posted online
In what’s being described as a generational shift in late-night television, Dave Letterman said yesterday he planned to retire from “The Late Show” on CBS in 2015.

The news was leaked by a tweet from performer Mike Mills, who was at the taping of “The Late Show” when Letterman announced his plan, according to CNN. Letterman told those on the set he talked it over with CBS chief executive Les Moonves.

“I phoned him just before the program, and I said 'Leslie, it's been great, you've been great, and the network has been great, but I'm retiring,'" Letterman said.

Letterman's move comes weeks after longtime rival Jay Leno retired from the NBC "Tonight Show" and was replaced by Jimmy Fallon. Last fall, Letterman extended his contract through 2015; news reports at the time said he gave no indication that it would be his last contract.

Letterman, who will turn 67 next week, has hosted "The Late Show" since 1993. The show has been nominated for 72 Emmy Awards and has won nine, CNN reported.
