Cyberattack against JPMorgan Chase affects 76M households

A cyberattack this summer on JPMorgan Chase compromised the accounts of 76 million households and seven million small businesses, a tally that dwarfs previous estimates by the bank and puts the intrusion among the largest ever.

Details of the breach were disclosed in a securties filing Thursday.

According to the New York Times, JPMorgan - unlike targeted companies such as Target and Home Depot - had financial information in its computer systems that goes beyond credit card details and potentially includes more sensitive data.

Operating overseas, the hackers gained access to the names, addresses, phone numbers and emails of JPMorgan account holders. According to JPMorgan's filing, there's no evidence that account information, including passwords or Social Security numbers, had been taken.
