CU offers lowest residential rates in recent survey

The newest survey by Memphis Light, Gas and Water says City Utilities of Springfield offers the lowest residential electricity rates and the lowest average monthly residential utility bill.

CU's rate of $62.40 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours for residential customers is the lowest among the more than than 30 utilities participating in the survey, which was released Monday. Residential customers also pay an average of $263.59 per month during the winter for all utilities – electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater.

The utility ranks second in electric bills for its largest commercial customers and fourth for its largest industrial customers, according to the survey.

CU was fifth in residential, commercial and industrial gas rates, 15th in residential water rates and fourth in residential wastewater bills.

Cities were selected based on size and geographic location, and the rates compared in the survey were effective as of Jan. 1.
