Crystal Bridges buys Jeff Koons' Hanging Heart sculpture

Posted online
Things are a bit shiner at the famed Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art these days, following the installation of the Arkansas museum's newest work  – a 3,000-pound gold heart.

Purchased from sometimes controversial American artist Jeff Koons, the piece – known as Hanging Heart – stands 9.5 feet wide and was installed Tuesday using an enormous magenta colored stainless steel ribbon.

Arkansas Business reports the museum didn't reveal a purchase price, but an almost identical piece, Hanging Heart (Magenta/Gold), sold in 2007 for a reported $23.6 million.

Other works by Koons – who is known for taking everyday, yet sentimental objects and reproducing them at monumental size – also have sold in the multimillion-dollar range. According to the article, in an auction in November at Christie's, Koons' Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58.4 million, which made it the most expensive work by a living artist sold at auction.
