Crypto lender founder sentenced to 12 years in prison

Alexander Mashinsky, the 59-year-old founder and former CEO of cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Mashinsky previously pleaded guilty in December to misleading customers by promising their investments were safe. Mashinsky reportedly pocketed more than $45 million while some customers lost everything; Celsius filed for bankruptcy in 2022.

A prosecutor said Mashinsky “preyed on hope."
