Stephen Wilhite, one of the lead inventors of the GIF, died from COVID-19. He was 74.
The GIF, or graphics interchange format, is now synonymous with internet memes.
Wilhite created the format while working at CompuServe in the 1980s. The patent for the GIF indicates it was made to produce “high-quality, high-resolution graphics” in color when internet speeds were much slower.
