Families in the Springfield area are invited to participate in a free community Fix-It Fair, an effort to repair and reuse items rather than buy replacements. The idea is to help local families avoid unnecessary replacement costs and reduce waste.
The event is hosted by Community Partnership of the Ozarks, in partnership with the Springfield-Greene County Library District. It runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library’s Maker Space.
CPO officials said skilled volunteers will repair household items, clothing, bicycles and small appliances at no charge.
“Whether it's a backpack that needs a new zipper before school starts or a small appliance that quit working, every repaired item helps families save money while keeping useful materials out of the landfill,” said Angela Watkins, community development specialist at CPO, in a news release. “Just as importantly, the Fix-It Fair reminds us that neighbors helping neighbors is one of the strongest ways we build community.”
There are limitations. Oversized items, gas-powered equipment and hazardous materials cannot be accepted.
CPO officials said the event also preserves practical repair skills by connecting experienced volunteers with community members eager to learn that many items don't have to be thrown away.
