CoxHealth to acquire Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute

Posted online
CoxHealth has entered into an agreement with Springfield Neurological and Spine Institute LLC to purchase the private neurosurgery practice, effective Jan. 1.

CoxHealth will purchase SNSI's clinic at 2900 S. National Ave., and its assets, according to a Cox news release.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"With this partnership, we expect to align physician and hospital incentives to improve access, expand services, reduce costs and create a seamless experience for patients," CoxHealth CEO and President Robert H. Bezanson said in the release. "We will look back on this day and remember it as the day we began something very special for neurosciences in our region."

The clinic's 12 physicians - and their assistants - will operate under the Springfield Neurological Institute LLC banner, while the 80 employees will become CoxHealth employees, the release said.

"CoxHealth and SNSI have been working on tighter clinical and financial integration since October 2003, and we believe that this partnership will better prepare us to meet the future needs of the patients and communities that we serve," Dr. Mark Crabtree, neurosurgeon and managing partner of SNSI, said in the release.

According to the release, patients will experience little change when the acquisition is completed.

A member of SNSI also will serve on the chairman's council of the CoxHealth Board of Directors.

SNSI began a primary hospital affiliation with CoxHealth in November 2003 and has worked closely with the hospital since, as a member of Cox NeuroHealth Services, according to the SNSI Web site.
