CoxHealth, Mercy scrutinized for garnishing patient wages

The Springfield News-Leader researched lawsuits related to medical debt filed by CoxHealth and Mercy between 2009 and 2013 in Greene County associate circuit court.

Among findings, the two nonprofit hopsitals reportedly garnished wages from patients who hadn't cleared medical debt.

The ratio CoxHealth filed medical debt suits in 2013 compared with Mercy was 17.5 to 1 in 2013. And in a third of those suits, an attempt for wage garnishment was made, the St. Louis Business Journal reported of the News-Leader study.
