The Master of Science in Nursing program at Cox College has received a five-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Five years is the maximum initial accreditation period offered by CCNE.
The first graduates of the MSN program at Cox College received their degrees this month. The program, which began in August 2009, offers three course options: family nurse practitioner; nurse educator; and clinical nurse leader.
“CCNE accreditation is critical for our graduates because it allows them to sit for the national certification exams in their specialty area,” said Dr. Anne Brett in a news release.
The college, which has an enrollment of around 700 students in nursing and other health professions, has seen its enrollment in undergraduate and graduate nursing classes increase by 110 percent during the past three years, according to the release.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing started the accreditation of baccalaureate and graduate level nursing programs through CCNE in 1996. The CCNE accreditation of Cox College’s MSN program included a review of its mission and goals, and determined whether the college was achieving those goals. CCNE’s board found the program had no compliance concerns and the program met all standards necessary to receive accreditation based on a site visit by two examiners and an assessment of a written self-study submitted by Cox College prior to the visit.
