The U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday temporarily blocked the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness program.
The block has been put in place as the court considers a motion from six Republican-led states to stop the program. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the court decision "merely prevents debt from being discharged until the court makes a decision."
Nearly 22 million people already have signed up, according to NPR.
