Court rules Snapchat can be sued over fatal car crash

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Snapchat can be sued over a fatal car crash in 2017.

Three young men died in the Wisconsin accident. One of them opened Snapchat to record the vehicle traveling at high speeds. The Snapchat "speed filter" that documents real-life speed was used.

The court found the case circumvents Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which typically protects social media companies from libel and other civil suits for what people post on sites. The court ruling indicates the issue was the design of the app itself.
