Couple donates art worth at least $50M to St. Louis museum

Posted online
The St. Louis Art Museum is the recipient of a windfall that includes two Norman Rockwell paintings and more than 200 works of Asian art from the collection of Edith and C.C. Johnson Spink. The collection, which features 225 paintings in all including two each from Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, is valued at no less than $50 million.

While the Rockwells and Wyeths are estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each, museum officials expect the Asian pottery, ceramics bronzes, glass and jade to make the largest impact on its collection.

Johnson Spink, who died in 1992, was the former editor of The Sporting News. Edith Spink, who died in 2011, was the former mayor of Ladue. Together, the couple collected art for years with the intention of donating the works to the art museum, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
