That’s the day the Greene County Collector’s Office is holding its annual sale of properties with delinquent tax bills.
Missouri Revised Statute 140.150 gives counties the ability to sell properties with unpaid property taxes to cover delinquent tax bills.
Property owners have until the day of the sale to pay the taxes and have their properties removed from the auction. There were nearly 200 properties on the list published in July, but it will likely shrink by Aug. 28.
In a typical year, about 50 properties go to auction, according to the collector’s office Web site.
Even after the auction, however, owners still have a year to redeem their property by paying the tax bill plus an additional 10 percent, which would go to the auction buyer.
The sale begins at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 in room 212 of the Greene County Courthouse, 940 Boonville Ave. Bidders must register for the auction; registration begins at 8 a.m. on Aug. 28. Bidders must bring a notarized copy of the bidder affidavit, which is available on the collector’s Web site at www.greenecountymo.org.
From Missouri Revised Statute 140.150
“All lands, lots, mineral rights and royalty interests on which taxes or neighborhood improvement district special assessments are delinquent and unpaid are subject to sale to discharge the lien for the delinquent and unpaid taxes or unpaid special assessments as provided for in this chapter on the fourth Monday in August of each year.”
