Council considers widening Campbell Avenue

Posted online
Springfield city leaders are thinking about contributing $1 million to a road project that would widen Campbell Avenue to six lanes in south Springfield.

At Monday night’s City Council meeting, council members heard a first-reading bill that would enter Springfield into a joint project with the Missouri Department of Transportation and Greene County. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission would take the lead on the project, which would widen Campbell from the South Avenue intersection southward to just north of Plainview Road.

The city’s portion of the $6.07 million widening would total $1 million, $200,000 of which would come from the city’s 1/8-cent transportation sales tax program, said Marc Thornsberry, director of Public Works. The remaining $800,000 would be funded through federal Surface Transportation Program-Urban funds, which will be allocated by the Ozarks Transportation Organization.

Greene County also would contribute $1 million of federal STP-Urban funds, also allocated by OTO.

The roadwork is expected to happen at the same time as improvements to Weaver Road and South Campbell Avenue intersection.

Council members will vote on the bill at the March 8 council meeting.
