Springfield City Council plans to consider two bills dealing with property sales at its Tuesday luncheon.
Council Bill 2009-223 would approve the purchase of the former Springfield Mill and Lumber facility, at 216 W. Central St., for $1.5 million.
The 2.8-acre parcel of land, which falls into the footprint of the city's Government Plaza, includes a 13,756-square-foot showroom built in 2000 and several storage buildings. The property became available for purchase when owners M. Lloyd Wright and Martha Wright closed the business earlier this year.
The property would be paid for primarily with nearly $1.5 million in funding from the federal Housing and Urban Development Economic Development Initiative; the money is designated for property acquisition in the Jordan Valley redevelopment area. About $26,000 in level property tax funding authorized to acquire property consistent with the city's Vision 20/20 long-range plan will complete the acquisition funding and closing costs.
A long-term use for the property has not been specifically identified, but according to a news release, the city had to make the purchase before HUD funding expires Sept. 30. City officials say the property would be held to redevelop for city use at some point in the future, though no funding for redevelopment is currently available.
Council also will consider selling a city-owned lot at Jefferson Avenue and Phelps Street to the Jordan Valley Community Health Center for nearly $142,000. The money would be returned proportionately to the level property tax fund and the brownfields grant fund.
The health center plans to use the lot to expand parking for its patients.
