Convoy of Hope responds to storm-struck Philippines

Posted online
Convoy of Hope has shipped supplies and sent workers to help with recovery efforts in the storm-struck Philippines.

As many as 10,000 people are feared dead in the central Philippines after Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the country on Friday, destroying 70 to 80 percent of the structures in its path and forcing more than 630,000 people from their homes, according to an NBC News report.

The Springfield nonprofit said on Nov. 8 that four shipping containers of food were en route to the country. Convoy also is sending water filtration units to the region, and a first assessment team was slated to depart to the Philippines on Sunday to assist local officials with immediate response work and plan long-term efforts, according to a news release.

"We are working with our contacts and partners on several islands. That will help expedite the delivery of relief to survivors," said Kary Kingsland, senior vice president of Convoy's global initiatives, in the release.

According to the release, Super Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda, produced winds of up to 195 miles per hour.
