Welcome to the Summer 2012 installment of Construction in the Ozarks. With research by the Springfield Business Journal team, including Missouri State University journalism interns Damien DiPlacido and Megan Gates, this feature sheds light on projects taking shape in southwest Missouri. Work under way now encompasses facilities for education, worship, banking and finance retail, recreation and health care.

City Utilities Maintenance Campus1600 Boonville Ave.
Branco Enterprises Inc. (Neosho) is the general contractor for City Utilities’ $7.5 million facility that will have two structures totaling 33,500 square feet for bus storage, washing and fueling. Project architect is H Design Group LLC. Engineers are Walter P. Moore and Associates Inc. (Kansas City), civil and structural; and Henderson Engineers Inc. (Lenexa, Kan.) mechanical, electrical and plumbing. CJW Transportation Consultants LLC did site development and surveying. Funding comes from Federal Transit Administration and CU matching funds.
TelComm Credit Union1750 E. Republic Road
MoDoCo Inc. is the general contractor renovating a former Kum & Go convenience store into TelComm Credit Union’s sixth branch. Hood-Rich Inc. is the architect and civil and structural engineer. Smith-Goth Engineers Inc. is the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer. TelComm President Don Ackerman said the property was gutted prior to its purchase by the credit union and deemed salvageable by Hood-Rich to create a 3,500-square-foot, full-service branch, including drive-through lanes and an ATM. Completion is slated for Oct. 1.
Hillcrest High School3319 N. Grant Ave.
Bales Construction Co. Inc. is the general contractor for an expansion at Hillcrest High School for Springfield Public Schools. Esterly Schneider & Associates Inc. is the architect. Engineers are Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing; Anderson Engineering Inc., civil; and Bob D. Campbell and Co., structural. The $8.38 million project, slated for completion in March, includes a Federal Emergency Management Agency storm shelter. Funding comes via 2009 bonds and a $1.2 million FEMA grant.
Doling Aquatics Center301 E. Talmage St.
Dock Brothers Construction Co. is the general contractor for an aquatics center at Doling Park for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. Hood-Rich Inc. is the architect and civil and structural engineer. Smith-Goth Engineers Inc. is the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer for the 13,788-square-foot, $3.3 million project, funded by the 1/4-cent county Parks sales tax. Indoor amenities include a slide and three-lane swimming pool, according to Parks spokeswoman Jenny Fillmer Edwards. Completion is slated for January.
FM Stores2814 S. Fremont Ave.
Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is the general contractor for the new location of FM Stores, owned by Bill, Edna and Todd Arbeitman. Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative is the architect. Engineers are Great River Associates Inc., civil and structural; and Colvin Jones Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The $1.2 million project comprises 10,000 square feet for FM Stores’ showroom and inventory, including fabric and quilting materials, and 5,000 square feet available for lease. The Arbeitmans plan to open the new store by Aug. 15.
Westport K-8 School415 S. Golden Ave.
DeWitt & Associates Inc. is the general contractor for Springfield Public Schools’ expansion of Westport Elementary School to 55,289 square feet, to accommodate students from Study Middle School, according to SPS spokeswoman Teresa Bledsoe. BCDM Architects (Omaha, Neb.) is the architect, and engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; Wells & Scaletty LLC, structural; and Malone, Finkle, Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The $11.5 million, bond-funded project is slated for completion in August 2013.
James River Assembly-West Campus3953 W. FR 168
J.E. Dunn Construction Co. is the general contractor for James River Assembly of God Inc.’s west campus renovation and expansion. Project architect is Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative. Engineers are Anderson Engineering Inc., civil; Miller Engineering PC, structural; and Smith-Goth Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The $14 million, 108,748-square-foot church will include a 1,400-seat main sanctuary. Construction is slated for completion in April.
Mercy Orthopedic Hospital3101 E. FR 188
General contractor McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. (St. Louis) on July 19 placed the final beam, topping off the roughly $116 million Mercy Orthopedic Hospital. HKS Architects Inc. (Dallas) is the architect. Engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; SSE Inc. (St. Louis), structural; and Heideman Associates Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Construction costs for the four-story, 48-bed hospital are about $78.5 million, according to Mercy Springfield Communities spokeswoman Lisa Cox. Completion is slated for August 2013.
