Posted online
The Federal Communications Commission recently announced it would give $60.7 million to Little Rock, Ark.-based Windstream Holdings Inc. as part of the Connect America Fund.

Arkansas Business reports the fund is intended to allow large telecommunications companies to extend broadband coverage to rural areas that may otherwise be too expensive to service.

With the additional funding, Windstream expects to implement broadband services in more than 100,000 rural and high-cost locations.

Other companies receiving money from the CAF include:
  • AT&T, $94.7 million;
  • Frontier Communications, $57.6 million;
  • CenturyLink, $39.7 million; and
  • FairPoint Communications, $2.89 million.
