Congress passes Respect for Marriage Act

The House followed the Senate in passing the Respect for Marriage Act.

The act requires federal and state governments to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages. The measure protects people in those marriages from discrimination on the basis of sex, race or ethnicity.

President Joe Biden said he would sign the legislation “promptly and proudly."
