According to a report from Bloomberg, fast-food workers plan to strike for $15 per hour pay in more than 100 cities across the U.S. today.
Showing their support, Democratic members of the U.S. Congress are urging McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MDC) to raise worker wages. Fifty-three members of Congress signed a letter mailed to executives with McDonald's, Burger Kind Worldwide Inc., Wendy's Co. and Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM).
Despite strikes last year, Bloomberg reports U.S. food-preparation and serving workers, including those in fast food, earn $9 an hour, or $18,720 a year, on average, according to May 2012 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Bloomberg reports Congress currently has pending legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour from $7.25 an hour and index it to inflation. Some states, including Missouri, have higher minimum wages than the federal level.
