Congress early Thursday certified Joe Biden's presidential victory after extremists stormed the Capitol building and delayed the proceedings yesterday.
"To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win," Vice President Mike Pence said. "Violence never wins. Freedom wins, and this is still the people's house."
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, made good on his pledge to contest the election results, a move that's been widely criticized.
President Donald Trump acknowledged his loss in a statement issued after the certification was finalized.
On Wednesday, insurrectionists emboldened by Trump to "stop the steal" of the election sought to disrupt the process by breaking into and damaging the Capitol building. One woman was killed by a Capitol Police officer in the Capitol, and a lockdown was enacted to protect lawmakers.
