ConAgra profits top expectations

ConAgra Foods Inc. today reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter profits.

The company earned $154.9 million, or 35 cents a share, up from $10 million, or 2 cents a share a year earlier. Last year's quarter was hurt by a $203 million loss from discontinued operations.

Adjusted share earnings - including a benefit related to the sale of its struggling private-label business for $2.7 billion - came to 71 cents from 61 cents last year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had forecast 60 cents a share in earnings.
